When I graduated from Medical School in Egypt in 2002, I knew right away what type of doctor I wanted to be.

I was lucky to be able to focus on dermatology during my residency for 2 years and was fascinated by the study of skin - it opened up a world of wonder as I realized how much of an impact this organ which we take for granted has on the rest of our body, and vice versa. How much our other body systems impact our skin. How our skin is a portal to the rest of our body, surveying what goes in and what comes out.

When I moved back home to America after lengthy work in dermatology abroad, I began to notice how little importance skin care had among the average American. Media and marketing only served to make big-name brand companies grow bigger. Magazines highlighted a handful of labeled skincare products and makeup.

But when speaking to other women, mothers, and young girls, it was clear few people had information about therapeutic skincare and how to treat common skin ailments. The skin-gut axis, a connection between the microbiomes of the skin and gut, was almost unheard of.

Why is skin so important? For instance, because our face is the first thing people notice about each other, even minor skin ailments and imperfections can cause mental distress and a lack of confidence. This is especially true among young adolescents but does not exclude adults. Having skin troubles can form a vicious circle where the skin ailment causes distress and mental anguish further causing imperfections to appear on the skin, which in turn increases distress.

Matters were not helped by social media. The lack of information and the abundance of misinformation has only grown since platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. What was most troubling was that the more I got deeply involved in skin care communities, the more it became clear that not only was this misinformation impacting ordinary people but skincare experts too.

This was troubling because the basic science of skin, the anatomy and physiology of this grand organ, the largest organ we have, wasn't well taught in technical schools all over the country.

My goal was to help people to find a healthy balance in their skin. I wanted to help build confidence in men and women and help improve their overall health. Despite years of training, I embarked on building my knowledge base with research, taking classes and obtaining multiple certifications.

I made an intention to build a service that would implement education, first and foremost, and therapeutic skin care services and products that actually are healing and mending to the overall health of the skin. By nature, our skin is constantly changing. This concept of eternal change and evolution of skin led to the name of the clinic we opened last year -  Eternaderm.

We take an integrated approach with a full history and thorough examination of all body systems. After discussing the clients' skin health and identifying the issue, we educate them on their particular skin type, how to care for their specific skin type, and develop a treatment protocol for any ailments.

This may include rewiring the organ, our skin, to function the way it’s naturally supposed to serve by providing its basic needs. Sometimes we have to take a closer look at gut health, or hormonal imbalances, or even stress-related mental illness. The simultaneous correction of these systems accentuates the results. Offering the resources and tools needed to obtain and maintain overall health will naturally lead to healthy glowing skin.

Some common issues we deal with include acne, hyperpigmentation, laxity and aging of the skin, scars, hair loss and many other minor imperfections. We offer laser hair removal and injectables that can aid to refine fine lines and fill anatomical abnormalities. All our treatments and products are medical-grade and utilize the most natural processes to improve the quality of skin based on scientific research.

The more a person knows about their skin, the better they can take care of it and prevent any further deterioration. My passion for teaching and educating the general public includes teaching classes to certify professionals who deal with aesthetics in their careers in order to further their knowledge. This is how we can ensure that the client population is receiving the best care for their skin.

Remember certification for estheticians, laser techs, nurses and doctors is essential. It is a sign that professionals have a strong foundation on the basic physiology and anatomy of the skin which will strengthen their treatment plans. This protects clients and will lead to optimal results. It will also reinforce skin care specialists' shared goal -  clients glowing, not only because their skin looks great but because their self-esteem has been restored.
