Amnesty International has suspended its Israel branch for two years, citing alleged “anti-Palestinian racism” and non-alignment with the organization’s stance on Israel’s actions in Gaza.

According to a letter from Amnesty’s interim international chairman, Tiumalu Lauvale Peter Fa’afiu, the suspension reflects internal actions that “violated core human rights principles.”

The global watchdog accused the Israel branch of undermining Amnesty's 2022 report, "Israel’s Apartheid Against Palestinians: Cruel System of Domination and Crime Against Humanity," and the 2024 publication, "‘You Feel Like You Are Subhuman:’ Israel’s Genocide Against Palestinians in Gaza."

Fa’afiu emphasized, “Efforts to discredit these findings have been deeply prejudicial to Amnesty’s mission, threatening our credibility, integrity, and operational coherence.”

The suspension allows for a review panel to determine whether Amnesty International Israel may return to the organization or face permanent exclusion.

The branch retains the right to appeal the decision, while a committee will further deliberate its future within Amnesty’s movement.

Reactions and Accusations of Bias

The Israeli branch has pushed back, accusing the global body of harboring anti-Semitic sentiments and stifling dissent.

Former Amnesty Israel Director Yonatan Gher condemned the suspension, describing the branch as a crucial “guardian of the Israeli government against the human rights movement.”

Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard announced in a leaked email that the issue would be formally addressed on January 21.

Certain supporters have argued that Amnesty and Human Rights Watch disproportionately target Israel, despite the limited scope of the country compared to global crises.

Beyond the Israel branch’s suspension, Amnestay faces broader questions regarding internal governance and accountability.

A 2022 paper for the Council on Foreign Relations, "Who Guards the Guardians?" criticized the insular and self-perpetuating structure of large NGOs like Amnesty. It highlighted that such organizations often lack external oversight, enabling unchecked biases.
