Texas Governor Greg Abbott has launched investigations into the proposed EPIC City, a planned Muslim-focused community in Collin and Hunt counties, sparking controversy and raising concerns about religious discrimination.

Abbott announced that "a dozen state agencies" and Attorney General Ken Paxton are reviewing the legal standing of the development, which is spearheaded by the East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) and its affiliate, Community Capital Partners.

The project envisions a 402-acre community with over 1,000 homes, a mosque, faith-based schools, a community college, and sports facilities.

Despite claims that EPIC City will be an inclusive and well-integrated neighborhood, Abbott has condemned the project, stating, "Sharia law is not allowed in Texas," although organizers have not proposed implementing Islamic law.

His opposition aligns with broader conservative concerns over Muslim communities, echoing past rhetoric from figures like former President Donald Trump, who sought travel bans targeting Muslim-majority nations.

Community Capital Partners insists the project will comply with federal housing laws and will not discriminate, emphasizing that it aims to create a "diverse and inclusive community."

However, Abbott’s stance, along with potential legislative actions, could present significant legal and political hurdles for EPIC City’s future.
