The decision by several Canadian cities to raise Israeli flags to commemorate the country’s Independence Day has ignited widespread outrage, particularly amid Israel's ongoing military campaign in Gaza. Palestinian rights advocates argue that honoring Israel in this manner is inappropriate given the current circumstances.

The flag-raising ceremonies in Ottawa and Toronto have faced significant backlash. The Ottawa event, initially planned as a public ceremony, was shifted to a private gathering due to concerns over public safety.

In Toronto, municipal staff approved a request from the Consulate General of Israel to raise the Israeli flag, leading to small protests by pro-Palestinian demonstrators outside the city hall building.

“As Jews, we scream it loud - Israel doesn't make us proud,” protesters chanted outside the city hall building in Toronto. “As Jews, we say not in our name - it's not our flag, we’re not the same.”

Critics argue that celebrating Israeli Independence Day amidst the deadly conflict in Gaza, where over 35,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began, is insensitive and disregards the suffering of Palestinian families.

The timing of the flag-raising events, coinciding with Nakba Day on May 15, further exacerbates tensions. Nakba Day commemorates the displacement of 750,000 Palestinians during the creation of the State of Israel in 1948. Jamila Ewais, a researcher with Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME), condemned the flag-raising ceremonies. “Celebrating Israel’s violent founding, especially this year, is equivalent to a celebration of injustice against the Palestinians,” Ewais said in a statement.

While the City of Ottawa defended its decision by citing its practice of commemorating national holidays and independence days, critics pointed out inconsistencies, noting that the city had previously refused similar requests, such as flying the Russian flag in 2022 amid tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

Leilani Farha, a human rights lawyer based in Ottawa, criticized the timing of the flag-raising events, particularly given Israel's alleged violations of international law, including accusations of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

“This action by the City is being viewed by this community - of which I am a member - as well as by many others who support Palestinians in Gaza and Palestinians Liberation, as a provocation and direct attack.”

The controversy surrounding the flag-raising ceremonies underscores the deep divisions and sensitivities surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, both globally and within Canadian communities.
