PSG has kicked Liverpool out of the Champions League and have qualified for the quarterfinals. Liverpool had a one-goal advantage from the first leg at Paris and were confident of their qualification. However, things didn’t go as planned for Liverpool as PSG came blowing in from the beginning.
Luis Enrique played the same XI that faced Liverpool last weekend in Paris. PSG outplayed Liverpool in the first leg but were unlucky in front of goal and conceded in the dying moment. The Spanish was hoping for a different outcome this time around at Anfield. Arne Slot also picked the same playing XI from the first leg.
Liverpool started better than their previous encounter, pressing high and making it difficult for PSG to play from the back. Muhammad Sala was particularly lively in the first 10 minutes of the game, creating chances but wasn’t able to get any past Donnaruma.
Ousmane Dembélé was phenomenal in the first leg for PSG, doing all but score a goal. However, things were different this time around, as he scored in the 12th minute from a close range that seemed like a mishit.
Both teams were playing attacking football throughout the 90 minutes and extra time, but none were able to score a goal despite very good chances. Liverpool were particularly good in the second half, pushing PSG towards their own half. Luis Diaz had a very good chance to take the lead for Liverpool but was denied by Ousmane Dembélé with an amazing save.
Donnaruma: Hero for Liverpool in Penalties
Both the goalkeepers had a wonderful tie, with Allison being the hero from the first leg and Donnaruma sending the PSG to the quarterfinals in the second. Donnaruma saved two brilliant penalties by Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones, after PSG players dispatched every one of theirs.
The final tally for penalties was 4-1 in favor of PSG, hence eliminating the favorites Liverpool out of the competition.
