British authorities have launched a full investigation into what is being treated as an Islamophobic hate crime after 85 graves were vandalized at Carpenders Park Lawn Cemetery in Watford, many of them belonging to babies and young children.
The incident was first discovered over the weekend by a grieving family visiting the site after a recent burial.
Hertfordshire Police confirmed the damage and said it has caused widespread distress, particularly among the local Muslim community. Officers have not yet made any arrests.
“This is an abhorrent incident and one that will understandably spark an emotive reaction in the community,” said Chief Superintendent Jon Simpson of the Local Policing Command. “We’re treating this with the utmost seriousness and are working with local leaders and Brent Council to support those affected.”
Community Grieves, Condemns Attack
Community leaders and public officials responded with swift condemnation. Council leader Muhammed Butt said the desecration appeared to be a targeted act of hate.
“It looks as though Muslim graves have been targeted in what appears to be an Islamophobic hate crime,” Butt said. “Our thoughts are with the families of those whose graves were desecrated. We will reinstate the damaged name plaques and restore the cemetery to a place of peace and remembrance as soon as the police investigation is complete.”
Dozens of memorial plaques were broken, and in some cases, topsoil was disturbed.
Wadi Funeralcare, which supports many Muslim families in the region, described the damage as “unspeakable acts of disrespect.”
Authorities Call for Witnesses to Come Forward
In response to the incident, Hertfordshire Police have increased patrols in the area and urged the public to come forward with any information.
Senior officers have begun direct engagement with community leaders to identify and support grieving families.
The force emphasized it is working with specialist officers to remain sensitive to the cultural and religious needs of those involved.
Brent Council, meanwhile, pledged to restore the cemetery as soon as authorities conclude their investigation.
“This incident has deeply shaken our community,” the Wadi Funeralcare spokesperson added. “But the swift response and shared outrage remind us of the strength we have when we stand together.”
