Singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes, 26, known for hits like "Stitches" and "There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back," stepped away from the music spotlight to attend Jummah (Friday) prayers at New York University (NYU).

The Canadian pop star joined fellow artist Mustafa Ahmed, professionally known as Mustafa the Poet, at the Islamic congregational prayer, sparking excitement and curiosity among fans.

Ahmed, 28, is a singer, songwriter, and poet from Toronto, celebrated for his introspective music and activism.

As a practicing Muslim who embraced Islam at age 15, Ahmed’s spiritual journey has been an integral part of his artistry. His influence may have inspired Mendes’ attendance at the prayer.

Photos and videos of Mendes participating in the prayer quickly circulated on social media platforms like X.

Reactions ranged from memes and jokes to heartfelt messages, with fans playfully dubbing him "Brother Shawn." Some even gave Mendes a "Muslim name," while others were inspired by his presence to prioritize their own prayers.

Fans celebrated his gesture as a wholesome act, calling it "the most heartwarming side quest of 2025."

Witnesses at the event noted Mendes’ humility and grace, sharing that he greeted attendees, chatted with students, and posed for selfies after the prayer.

“He stood in line and prayed alongside everyone else,” one attendee said. “He showed a deep respect for the ritual.”

Dressed in a black shirt, Mendes appeared focused and attentive throughout the prayer, even listening closely to the sermon. A witness recalled, “He has always shown interest in different cultures and religions. He respects his friends’ beliefs, and that’s why he was there to support Mustafa.”

Ahmed has often spoken about his commitment to Islam and how it shapes his life and music. His debut album, "Dunya," reflects his introspective journey and resonates with fans worldwide.
