The gunman who carried out a racist massacre that left 23 people dead at a Walmart in El Paso in 2019 pleaded guilty to capital murder in state court Monday and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Patrick Crusius, now 25, was sentenced under a plea agreement that spared him the death penalty — a decision guided by the wishes of the victims’ families, according to El Paso County District Attorney James Montoya.

“This decision reflects the voices of those who suffered most,” Montoya said. “Many families expressed their desire to see the case resolved without prolonged court proceedings.”

Crusius, who had already received 90 consecutive life terms on federal hate crime and firearm charges, admitted to intentionally targeting Hispanic shoppers in a premeditated attack on Aug. 3, 2019 — one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history and among the worst assaults on Latinos in modern times.

Joe Spencer, Crusius’ defense attorney, said the plea agreement offered the community “judicial finality” and prevented a lengthy and painful trial.

“He brought violence and terror to a place of peace,” Spencer said. “He shattered lives and forever changed the landscape of El Paso. We offer our deepest condolences.”

Spencer added, “Patrick will leave prison only in a coffin on God’s time.”

Crusius, a white community-college dropout, drove more than 700 miles from Allen, Texas, to El Paso. Hours before the shooting, he posted an anti-immigrant screed online warning of a so-called Hispanic “invasion of Texas.”

He then opened fire with an AK-style rifle both inside and outside the Walmart, which was crowded with shoppers from both the U.S. and Mexico.

Diagnosed Mental Illness and a Calculated Attack

According to his defense team, Crusius has been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, a condition marked by hallucinations, delusions, and mood swings. Spencer said the gunman had suffered from severe mental illness for most of his life.

“You are talking about an individual with a broken brain,” Spencer said. The victims ranged widely in age, from a 15-year-old high school athlete to elderly grandparents.

Among them were immigrants, a retired city bus driver, a schoolteacher, skilled laborers, including a former iron worker, and several Mexican nationals who had crossed the border on shopping trips.

The decision to forgo the death penalty, while controversial to some, was meant to offer peace and certainty to the families most affected.
