United Nations experts have voiced deep concern regarding credible reports of severe human rights abuses faced by Palestinian women and girls in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank since Oct 7.

The allegations center on claims that not only have Palestinian women and girls been sexually violated but there are reports that some have been “executed” in Gaza, along with family members, including children.

"We are deeply troubled by accounts of intentional targeting and extrajudicial killings of Palestinian women and children in areas where they sought sanctuary, or while attempting to escape. Some were reportedly carrying white cloths when they were fatally shot by the Israeli army or associated forces," stated the experts.

The experts voiced significant apprehension regarding the arbitrary imprisonment of numerous Palestinian women and girls, as well as human rights advocates, journalists, and humanitarian personnel, in both Gaza and the West Bank since October 7th.

Many of these females have reportedly endured inhumane and degrading treatment, being deprived of menstrual pads, food, and medicine, and subjected to severe beatings.

Insufficient access to water and sanitation puts women and girls at risk of infections like hepatitis B and thrush. Those in shelters struggle to obtain supplies, compounded by limited awareness about menstrual health among men and boys.

In one instance, Palestinian women in Gaza were purportedly confined in a cage during inclement weather without access to food.

“We are particularly distressed by reports that Palestinian women and girls in detention have also been subjected to multiple forms of sexual assault, such as being stripped naked and searched by male Israeli army officers.

At least two female Palestinian detainees were reportedly raped while others were reportedly threatened with rape and sexual violence,” the experts said.

Additionally, they noted reports stating that the Israeli army took photos of female detainees in degrading circumstances and posted them online.

It was emphasized in the statement that an undisclosed number of Palestinian women and children have reportedly gone missing after interactions with the Israeli military.

There are indications that at least one female infant was forcibly transferred by the Israeli army into Israel, and children have been separated from their parents, with their whereabouts remaining unknown.

In December, the Palestinian Authority's Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs officially stated that Israeli jails currently hold at least 142 females, including elderly women and infants.

Alongside the Palestinian Prisoners' Club, the commission issued a joint warning, highlighting the occurrence of "horrific crimes" against these female detainees.

Since October 7th, women and children make up 70 percent of the deaths in Gaza, standing at over 29,000 currently. In contrast, from 2008 until October 7th, 2023, women and girls accounted for less than 14 percent of the 6,542 Palestinian deaths recorded by the UN.

Over the years there have been numerous allegations of IDF soldiers raping or sexually violating Palestinian women, especially those imprisoned, however, its claimed threats of retaliation such as dissemination of explicit photos have ensured the victims' silence.

In one infamous case, a soldier was convicted of raping and sexually exploiting multiple Palestinian women in 2016. The secrecy surrounding the case has meant his name has never been made public, an illustration of how the Israeli army controls reporting on such incidents.

Sexual assaults are also not reserved for women and girls. There have been other reports of men being sexually violated as well. Since Oct 7 Israel has already faced condemnation for its treatment of male detainees in military custody, following the emergence of photos and videos depicting lines of detainees, stripped to their underwear and blindfolded, seated on Gaza streets.

According to Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor NGO, Israeli civilians were allegedly invited to witness the interrogation and torture of Palestinians held in Israeli custody.

Omar Abu Mudallala, 43, who was recently released, recounted to the human rights group that Israeli soldiers had brought Israeli civilians to observe the barbaric treatment which included instances of nudity.

UN Women’s Executive Director, Sima Bahous echoed U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ appeals for a humanitarian cease-fire, "In spite of our sorrow for the plight of the women and girls in Gaza today, our grief will only deepen tomorrow without unhindered humanitarian aid and a halt to the devastation and loss of life," Bahous stated in a press release accompanying the report.

“These women and girls are deprived of safety, medicine, health care, and shelter. They face imminent starvation and famine. Most of all they are deprived of hope and justice,” she said.

Israel has predictably rejected the "despicable and unfounded" allegations made by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights regarding alleged war crimes by the IDF against Palestinian women and girls.

"These [UN] mandate holders have remained silent on the horrific sexual violence and gender-based violence perpetrated by Hamas on and since October 7. It is clear that the co-signatories are motivated not by the truth but by their hatred for Israel and its people."

However, this contradicts the facts. The UN agency UN Women released a statement in December condemning the Oct. 7 attacks on women saying it was “alarmed by the numerous accounts of gender-based atrocities and sexual violence during those attacks.” and it has since launched an investigation into the claims.
