Renowned singer Maher Zain is facing intense scrutiny after promoting his latest music video in front of Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina.

The controversy erupted after footage from the promotional event surfaced online, sparking debate over its appropriateness, particularly during Ramadan.

Critics argue that filming near one of Islam’s holiest sites, especially during Ramadan 2025, disrespects the sanctity of the location.

A key point of contention is the presence of non-mahram men and women together, which goes against traditional norms of gender segregation in sacred spaces. Many believe this undermines the spiritual atmosphere that should prevail in Medina, particularly near the Prophet’s Mosque.

Beyond the setting, some critics also take issue with the musical instrumentation in Zain’s songs, arguing that it falls outside the accepted boundaries of Islamic nasheed.

Public Reaction and Religious Debate

The backlash has been swift and widespread, with social media users voicing strong opinions.

One commentator lamented, “Imagine being in Medina during the blessed month of Ramadan, right before the Prophet’s Mosque, promoting a music video and engaging in free mixing. Have we lost all sense of reverence?”

Others accused the singer of using the holy site as a commercial backdrop, questioning whether his actions reflect genuine respect for the sacred land and the resting place of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.

A viral Twitter thread cited a Hadith from Sahih Bukhari (1867), in which the Prophet declared Medina a sanctuary where “no heresy should be innovated nor any sin committed.” Some critics questioned, “Would Umar ibn Khattab tolerate this behavior near the Prophet’s grave?”

The timing of the video—during Ramadan—has further fueled the backlash. As of now, Maher Zain has yet to issue a formal response addressing the controversy.
