70-Year-Old Flamingo Lays First Egg, Defying Odds at Pensthorpe Nature Reserve

An unexpected and heartwarming event occurred at Pensthorpe Nature Reserve in Fakenham, England. Gertrude, a 70-year-old flamingo, has laid her first-ever egg. This remarkable occurrence is almost unheard of given that flamingos typically live around 35 years in the wild and stop breeding after about 40 years.

Gertrude's life at Pensthorpe has been quite a journey. She arrived at the reserve in 2018 from WWT Slimbridge and was considered "unlucky in love" until she paired with Gil, a 37-year-old flamingo.

Despite their significant age difference, their bond has blossomed, culminating in the laying of this egg. Although the egg is not fertile and will not hatch, the staff celebrates the event as a sign of Gertrude's health and vitality.

Ben Marshall, the managing director of Pensthorpe, expressed his amazement at this development, "Flamingos might live 40 years and Gertrude is 70, so at that ripe old age to be able to display maternal characteristics is amazing. It's her first time laying an egg... it probably won't hatch, but for her to be able to display those natural characteristics and to have the enrichment of going through that - it's amazing."

According to the managing director, the incident is a testament to the care and environment provided at the reserve. It indicates that Gertrude is happy and thriving, a noteworthy achievement considering her previous lack of interest in breeding.

Gertrude's story doesn't just stop with her egg. Known for being protective of the young in her flock, she is expected to be a wonderful aunt and babysitter for the upcoming generation of flaminglets. This nurturing role adds another layer of enrichment to her life and highlights the social bonds within the flamingo community at Pensthorpe.

Visitors to the reserve can spot Gertrude in the wetland discovery area, where she proudly displays a white-leg ring marked "GPC." Her partner, Gil, can also be identified by his ring marked "GIL." This visibility allows visitors to witness firsthand the fruits of the dedicated conservation efforts at Pensthorpe.
