Babar Azam’s Record-Breaking Journey: Fastest to 6,000 ODI Runs

Babar Azam has once again etched his name in the record books, becoming the fastest Asian batter to reach 6,000 ODI runs. The Pakistan star achieved the milestone in just 123 innings—13 fewer than Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli—matching South African legend Hashim Amla’s record.

Babar’s latest achievement further cements his status among modern cricket’s elite. Since making his ODI debut in 2015, he has consistently dominated bowlers across formats, compiling 34 half centuries and 19 centuries in the process. His impeccable technique and composure at the crease have drawn comparisons to some of the game’s greatest batters.

The feat also sees Babar become the 11th Pakistani to surpass 6,000 ODI runs, and with his current form, he is on the verge of breaking yet another record—most ODI centuries for Pakistan. Currently, he sits just one behind Saeed Anwar, who holds the national record with 20 centuries.

Most ODI Centuries for Pakistan

Saeed Anwar – 20 centuries

Babar Azam – 19 centuries

Mohammad Yousuf – 15 centuries

Fakhar Zaman – 11 centuries

Mohammad Hafeez – 11 centuries

A Mixed Phase for Babar

While his statistical milestones continue to grow, Babar has struggled for runs in the ongoing tri-series. Scores of 10, 23, and 29 in his last three innings have raised concerns about his form, yet the team management remains unwavering in its trust.

The 30-year-old has been in poor form lately, scoring less than 100runs in three matches

With opener Saim Ayub sidelined due to injury, Babar has been pushed to the top of the order—a decision that has sparked debate. However, Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan has defended the move, highlighting Babar’s ability to handle the new ball.

"At the top, if the ball swings, he can control it," Rizwan said. "When Abdullah Shafique got out early in South Africa, Babar had to deal with the new ball anyway. He was coping with the seam and swing and enabling us to attack at the end. So we thought, why not go with our most technically solid player to open?"

Despite recent struggles, Babar’s track record suggests he is never far from a match-winning knock. With the ODI World Cup approaching, Pakistan will be hoping their star batter regains his rhythm at the crease—because when Babar Azam is at his best, few can match his class.
