Saif Ali Khan, one of Bollywood’s most acclaimed actors, was stabbed in his Bandra apartment early Thursday morning in a violent home invasion.
A news agency reported the 54-year-old actor was rushed to a Mumbai hospital with six stab wounds, including one perilously close to his spine. Two injuries were deeper and required urgent surgical attention.
Dr. Nitin Dange, one of the surgeons treating Khan, provided an update, saying, “He sustained a major injury to the thoracic spinal cord due to a lodged knife. Surgery was performed to remove the knife and repair the leaking spinal fluid.”
According to Khan’s medical team, the star is in stable condition, albeit still admitted to the ICU for observation.
The incident could, however, affect Khan’s working schedule and the long list of films he is scheduled to star in.
Khan’s wife, A-list actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, who also comes from a family of celebrated actors, directors and producers, issued an official statement following the attack.
Taking to her social media, Kareena shared a heartfelt message, urging the media to avoid unfounded speculations and respect the family’s privacy during this challenging period.
“It has been an unimaginably difficult day for our family, and we are still coming to terms with what has happened,” she wrote. “As we work through this trying time, I humbly and sincerely request the media and paparazzi to refrain from excessive speculation and intrusive coverage.”
CCTV Footage Captures Suspect; Investigation Underway
Khan, having starred in over 70 films, might have to delay work on current projects after incident
Security footage revealed the attacker entering Khan’s Bandra West residence at 2:33 a.m., dressed in a t-shirt and jeans with an orange scarf over his shoulder. The man, carrying a backpack, looked directly at the camera before proceeding further into the building.
Police have launched a manhunt and are investigating the motive behind the attack. The incident has sparked public concern over safety in Mumbai’s affluent suburbs.
Filmmaker Pooja Bhatt, addressing the issue on social media, remarked, “The city, and especially the queen of the suburbs, has never felt so unsafe before.”
A Heritage of Royalty, Cricket, Cinema
Nawab Iftikhar Ali Pataudi with his grandchildren including Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi
Khan is not only a Bollywood icon but also the heir to the illustrious Pataudi family, whose history spans royalty, sports and culture.
The family traces its lineage to Faiz Talab Khan, an Afghan Pashtun who became the first Nawab of Pataudi in 1804 after aligning with the British East India Company during the Second Anglo-Maratha War.
Saif’s grandfather, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, was both the eighth Nawab and a cricketer who represented India and England in the 1930s.
His father, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, followed suit, becoming one of India’s most celebrated cricket captains. Though princely titles were abolished in 1971, the Pataudis' cultural legacy remains influential.
A Life Shaped by Faith and Culture
Growing up in Bhopal and Pataudi, Khan experienced a rich blend of religious and cultural influences.
His grandmother played a pivotal role in his early education, ensuring he read the Quran and understood its cultural significance. “My grandmother made me read the Quran, which I now see as an academic understanding of our culture and religion,” Khan said in a past interview.
Despite his Muslim upbringing, Khan embraced Hindu traditions, celebrating festivals like Holi.
As an adult, Khan considers himself a “secular Muslim.”
Khan said, “I’m not very Islamic or religious, but I hope people see me as a secular Muslim.”
