India’s preparations for the Champions Trophy suffered a setback as Virat Kohli missed the first ODI against England due to a knee issue. His absence, the first due to injury in three years, has raised concerns among fans and the team management, especially with the mega event just around the corner.
Kohli was seen at the pre-match practice session on Thursday with his right knee heavily strapped. While he took part in batting sessions, his footwork seemed a little off. Although he was deemed fit enough to play, the team opted for caution, resting him to prevent any major setback.
With Kohli sidelined, captain Rohit Sharma announced at the toss that Yashasvi Jaiswal would make his ODI debut. While the injury appears minor, the timing is worrying. India is already dealing with fitness concerns, with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah racing against time to be fit for the Champions Trophy.
A team insider provided an update on Kohli’s condition, stating, “His knee was fine during practice, but it swelled up once we returned to the hotel. It doesn’t seem too serious, though. He is likely to play the Cuttack ODI.”
Kohli’s last injury-forced absence was in 2022, when he missed a Test against South Africa. Given his reputation for fitness and endurance, any injury scare is bound to draw attention.
With the Champions Trophy looming, India cannot afford to lose key players, making Kohli’s recovery crucial for their title ambitions.
As the team looks ahead to the remaining ODIs against England, all eyes will be on Kohli’s progress. India’s squad depth will be tested, but the management will be hoping their star batsman is back to full fitness before the high-stakes tournament begins.
