India Picks Asia Cup Squad; Bumrah Back, Gill Vice-Captain, Jaiswal Out

India has announced its 15 member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE, marking a significant moment as several star players return to the fold for the defending champions.

The selection, led by BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar and captain Suryakumar Yadav, reveals a strategic blend of explosive new talent and seasoned experience, though it came with its share of tough omissions.

The most anticipated return is that of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. The pacer is set to play his first T20 International in over a year, having been rested from white ball cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup and later missing the Champions Trophy due to injury.

His comeback is a major boost for the bowling attack. On the management of his workload, Agarkar stated, “I don't think there's any written plan... Clearly we want him available for all the big games. There are World Cups, Champions Trophy, big series... you want him available.”

In a notable leadership decision, Test captain Shubman Gill has not only been included in the T20I squad after a year out but has also been appointed vice captain. This follows a prolific IPL 2025 season where he scored 650 runs.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav welcomed his return, saying, “Last time when he played T20 post WC, when we went to SL, he was vice captain... After that we got busy with Test cricket, and he didn't get opportunities. We're happy to have him.”

The batting unit showcases a clear strategy, investing in the young trio of Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, and Rinku Singh, who have all had breakthrough performances over the past year.

Their selection, however, came at a cost. Despite impressive IPL tallies, Shreyas Iyer scoring 604 runs and Yashasvi Jaiswal 559, both were left out of the main squad. Jaiswal finds himself among the five reserve players.

Agarkar explained the difficult choice between the young openers: “It's unfortunate. With what Abhishek has done over the last year or so, plus he gives us a bowling option if required. One of these guys was always going to miss out.”

The selection of Rinku Singh, despite a below par IPL, also raised eyebrows. Agarkar clarified this was a choice for batting depth over an additional spinner, noting, “we felt we needed an extra batter in Rinku. And you could only pick 15. If there were 16, maybe (Washington Sundar) could've been in.”

The wicketkeeping duties will be handled by Sanju Samson as the first choice, having formed a strong opening partnership with Abhishek Sharma. Jitesh Sharma provides backup. The all round department remains a core strength, powered by the experienced Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel, with Shivam Dube adding further depth.

The spin attack will be led by Varun Chakaravarthy, following his stellar performances in the UAE during the Champions Trophy. He is complemented by Kuldeep Yadav, who makes his T20I return since the 2024 World Cup final. The pace battery, led by Bumrah, includes the 2024 ICC Men’s T20I Player of the Year, Arshdeep Singh, and the young quick Harshit Rana.

India’s campaign for a record extending ninth title begins on September 10 against hosts UAE in Dubai. This is followed by the marquee clash against arch rivals Pakistan on September 14, and a group stage finale against Oman on September 19. The tournament then moves into the Super Fours stage, with the final scheduled for September 28 in Dubai.

The squad announcement sets the stage for what the team hopes is the beginning of a successful new cycle. As captain Suryakumar Yadav put it, “First big tournament after last year's T20 WC. It's a good tournament to test ourselves. Lot of T20s after this also. The journey starts from here.”
