Robert Lewandowski will stay one more year at Barcelona after a contract extension with the club. He was expected to fulfill his contract clause of featuring in at least half of the matches in the season, which will allow him to stay for another year. The clause can be triggered as he is almost certain to feature against Rayo Vallecano on the weekend.
However, Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish news outlet, reports that the Polish striker has already agreed contract extension with Barcelona, keeping him at the club till 2026.
The brilliance of Lewandowski is evident by the fact that he will be 38 when his contract with Barcelona ends. Barcelona is known for trying and developing new talents, not playing 37-year-old strikers. Even the great Ronaldinho wasn’t offered a new contract and was deemed old for the club.
The former Bayern Munich star is in great form this season, scoring 31 goals in 33 appearances. He is also the top scorer in the Champions League this season with nine strikes. With an attacking manager like Hansi Flick, Lewandowski will be hoping to win all the possible titles this season, including La Liga and the Champions League.
Lewandowski is the third-top scorer in the history of the Champions League, behind the greats Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. He has also scored 90 goals so far for Barcelona and will soon enter the list of the top 20 goal scorers in Barcelona’s history, despite playing just four seasons for them.
However, it's not all green for Barcelona and Lewandowski. Barcelona, tied up in some huge financial complexities, cannot sign a world-class young striker at the moment and has to rely on Lewandowski. The Polish striker, on the other hand, is in the twilight of his career and could not find a better team than the Spanish giants.
Whether it’s a good decision by Barcelona to extend his contract and whether Lewandowski will be able to keep his form at that age are the questions only time can answer.
